In France, a 21 year old woman with Down Syndrome named Melanie got a chance to present the weather on the news.
(Down syndrome is a genetic chromosome 21 disorder causing developmental and intellectual delays)
After a French charity called Unapei started the Facebook campaign, Melanie peut le faire (Melanie Can Do It), which was called to promote awareness and inclusion, reached their goal of 100,000 likes in just 36 hours, Melanie was on her way to becoming a news anchor.
Shortly afterwards, Melanie received extensive training courtesy of France 2’s weather team, to help her with presenting in front of the green screen where the graphics are digitally projected.
“Melanie cannot read or write. The goal is to make her feel integrated,” Nathalie Rihouet, head of the weather service of France Televisions, told the French newspaper Le Parisien.
“I’m different, but I’d like to show everyone that I can do a lot of things,” Melanie said.
